TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Washburn Rural boys golf team is back on the course. With Monday marking the start of the spring season for high school athletics, the defending Class 6A state champions have their eyes set on a repeat in 2016.
In last year’s state championship, the Junior Blues were tied with Blue Valley North 296-296 after the top four golfers on each team were tallied. Washburn Rural was declared the winner because its 5th-man score was lower than Blue Valley North’s.
“We will have a target on our backs,” said Washburn Rural golf coach Jared Goehring. “But we’ve also kind of taken it in stride as well that only one team can say that (defending a state title), an we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
“We lost obviously five seniors last year and we need some people to step into those roles so we can keep winning, and keep the tradition up,” said Washburn Rural sophomore golfer Parker Beal.
