Soldier found dead in Manhattan identified

FORT RILEY(KSNT) – A 1st Infantry Division Soldier who was found dead in his vehicle March 19 in Manhattan has been identified.

Sgt. Shaun Covington, 25, was a signal support noncommissioned officer assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div. He arrived at Fort Riley in February 2013.

Covington deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from April 2011 through April 2012 and Operation Inherent Resolve from June 2014 to March 2015.

“The Quarterhorse squadron is deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt.Covington,” said Lt. Col. Bradley Laauwe, commander of 1st Sqdn., 4th Cav.Regt. “We are prepared to support Shaun’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The Riley County Police Department is investigating Covington’s death.
