TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office reports they have noticed a recent increase in mail thefts, vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts in all parts of Shawnee County.
The Sheriff’s Office says it is a good reminder to place outgoing mail in a post office drop box and collect your mail packages as soon as they arrive.
Criminals are following mail carriers and removing mail from mailboxes looking for any information to steal identity or financial information. Criminals are also reportedly taking packages dropped off on doorsteps.
The Sheriff’s Office says to please keep vehicles locked, property removed and ensure there are no spare keys in the vehicle. Criminals are removing loose items found in vehicles including electronics, money, purses, backpacks, firearms, garage door openers, keys, and other miscellaneous items.
The Sheriff’s Office says burglars may approach a residence and if the homeowner is home, they will make up an excuse for being on the property. They say to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement at 785-251-2200.
