TOPEKA (KSNT) — Shawnee County commissioners took steps today to secure funding for the aging Willard Bridge.
The governing body unanimously authorized a contract with the Kansas Department of Transportation to pay for the $8.5 million project.
KDOT would cover the cost 100 percent and the county would use the loan to make monthly payments to the contractor. Then, in March of 2018, the county would use funds from the 2017 countywide half-cent sales tax to make payments back to KDOT over time.
Last year, weight limits were set on the aging structure because of deterioration on the Willard Bridge across the Kansas River.
