EMPORIA (ESU ATHLETICS) – The #10 Emporia State baseball team completed a sweep of Central Oklahoma with a 25-8 win Sunday afternoon. The last time Hornet baseball had 25 or more runs scored was March 29, 2010 at Nebraska – Omaha in a 34-19 win.
RIGHT OFF THE BAT
After the Bronchos were scoreless in the first inning, the Hornets had six runs off seven hits for their first at bat of the day. Evan Koehler had a two run home run to put his season total at 16 home runs. Wade Hanna, Daniel LaMunyon, Dalton Wheat, Alex White, Braxon Byfield, and Levi Ashmore all had a single in the bottom of the first.
HORNETS SEAL THE DEAL
At the end of four innings Emporia State led 11-2. The Bronchos put another two runs on the board in the top of the fifth to trail 11-4 going into the bottom of the inning. The Hornets had a big fifth inning, scoring 11 runs off of six hits and three Broncho errors. Jonny Hodges had a three run homer in the inning for his first of the season. Hanna, Wheat, Byfield, and Ashmore each had another single in the fifth inning, Derek Francis with a double. Tyler Palmore had a three run home run in the bottom of the sixth to reach 25 runs for Emporia State. Central Oklahoma would score a run in the sixth and three in the seventh as the Hornets won 25-8.
Six different Hornets had a home run on the day, including Hodges, Koehler, LaMunyon, BJ Dean, Francis, and Palmore. Palmore, Byfield, and Hodges led with three RBI each while Ashmore, Koehler, LaMunyon, Wheat, Dean and Francis all had two RBI. Byfield and Francis hit three for four, Francis with four runs scored. Dalton Wheat hit four for six while LaMunyon went two for three with three runs scored. Hanna went two for four, Ashmore hitting two for five.
Jordan Plank pitched five innings for Emporia State to pick up the win and improve to 5-1 on the season. He had nine strike outs and only three walks. Trey Taylor and Dylan Holden finished the game for the Hornets, pitching one inning each. Emporia State pitchers had 11 strike outs and four walks.
The #10 Hornets will travel to Missouri Western Tuesday, April 5 for their third game of a mid week series. First pitch will be at 5:00 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo.
