Fire at 300 SE California causes $12,500 in damages

TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Topeka Fire Department got a call about a house fire at 300 SE California Ave. at 3:23 a.m. on Sunday after the person inside woke up to a smoke-filled house.

When they arrived at the scene, they found smoke and heavy flames coming from the house. The house was searched, but no one else was found inside.

A TFD Investigations Unit went to the scene and, after a preliminary investigation, determined that the fire was an accident and was caused by ashes from a fire that were not properly thrown away.

The total dollar loss is $12,500, with $4,500 of that as structural damages and $8,000 as content losses.

The Topeka Police Department, American Medical Response, Westar Energy, Kansas Gas Service and the Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted at the scene.
