BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) — In a historic move, the U.S. Army has announced it will now allow women to be assigned combat roles.
The army made the announcement yesterday.
22 women training to become army officers will now serve as Second Lieutenants.
13 more women have been approved to become Armor Officers. Nine are approved for infantry service.
This new opening for women came after Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the organization had decided to eliminate gender barriers to women.
The new women officers should be commissioned in the next few weeks.
