Zach Haney files for Topeka City Council seat in District 4

TOPEKA (KSNT) — If a Topeka entrepreneur gets his way he could become the youngest city council member ever.

20-year-old Zach Haney has his sights set on the open seat in district four. And he says he’s up to the challenge.

“I want to make a difference,” says Haney.

Best known as the “Carnival Guy,” Haney is now working as a motivational speaker at Action Coach in Topeka.

This young man may soon have a big role to take on. He’s hoping to take over Jonathan Schumm’s seat as the Topeka City Council Member for District 4.

“My passion to serve in the community hasn’t left since I ran last time,” Haney says.

The 2014 Shawnee Heights High School graduate ran for city council last year, but came up short in the primary. Schumm wound up winning the district four seat.

After facing charges of child abuse, Schumm resigned in the beginning of the month as part of an agreement with District Attorney Chad Taylor.

“Highland Park is in my district and I want to try and encourage them to look at being engaged in local government,” said Haney. “I see a lot of potential for us to do that with other young people in the community.”

District 4 also serves parts of the Hi-Crest area, a community that was the center of gun violence last summer.

“Last year my company had the opportunity to work on a couple of events in the Hi-Crest neighborhood, and encourage neighbors to come out and get to know your neighbors.”

The city has recognized that they have a problem with attracting young people. Haney is hoping that could all change with a young set of eyes and a young voice. Haney is the only person to file for the District 4 seat so far.

The application deadline is May 9. The council will hold interviews with those who are interested in the position on May 10.
