5-month-old killed in fiery Virginia crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — An infant was killed in a fiery multi-vehicle crash on I-264 West at Rosemont Road, Monday afternoon.

The accident was reported on mile marker 18.7 around 2:30 p.m., according to VDOT.

According to Virginia State Police, a 2002 Nissan Sentra was traveling on I-264 West when the car broke down in the travel lane. The car was then struck by a 2008 Chevy Silverado, causing the Nissan to spin around and collide with an HRT bus that was not in service.

The impact caused the Nissan to catch on fire.

As the car was rapidly engulfed by the fire, a 31-year-old old woman, a 28-year-old man and a 2-year-old girl were rescued from the vehicle.

A 5-month-old died in the fire.

“My heart goes out to the family, ’cause I’ve never rolled past nothing like that,” said Martika Corbett, who witnessed the aftermath. “The car that was burned looked like it was turned in the opposite direction.”

All westbound lanes were shut down for hours. A detour was in place at Lynnhaven Parkway. Traffic started moving without delays around 7:30 p.m.
