TOPEKA (KSNT) – “This will be the marquee match-up on the schedule state-wide for sure, and even nationally,” said Seaman head coach Steve Bushnell.
“He’s (Riley Pint) one of the best,” said Seaman pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn. “So it’s going to be difficult for us, but we’re just going to have to go out there and battle in the box and scrap out a run or two so I can keep it there.
Ryan Zeferjahn, a KU baseball commit will lead the Vikings up against St. Thomas Aquinas and its ace, Riley Pint. An LSU commit, but a projected top pick in this June’s MLB Draft. Their stat lines are both dominant, and very impressive.
“Ryan obviously throws a lot harder than other people, but he’s also got good command of his breaking ball, his change-up, and he’s able to throw all of those pitches for strikes,” said Seaman catcher Jackson Cobb.
“I just think his confidence and just his ability to command his pitches this year may be the difference in what’s separated him from the past,” said Bushnell. “He’s got a whip-out slider, he can throw it on both sides of the plate with his fastball. A two-seamer, a four-seamer. He’s just a competitor.”
Zeferjahn has a 6-1 record. He’s pitched 48 innings this season and given up just nine earned runs while striking out 74. But the Aquinas flamethrower has topped him. Pint is also 6-1, but he’s only given up three runs in 42 innings and has an era of 0.50. He’s struck out 75 batters.
There won’t be shortage of MLB scouts in Wichita at Eck Stadium at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday evening to watch these two superstars pitch on the biggest stage.
“It’s going to be a classic,” said Bushnell. “It’s going to be a duel made for TV atmosphere and we’re going to be ready and hopefully go out there and have a chance to scratch one out.”
