Topeka morning structure fire suspected as arson, suspect arrested

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Topeka firefighters responded to a fire in the 700 block of SW Tyler Street Friday morning.

When fire crews arrived they found smoke coming from a two story wood frame apartment building. Crews were quickly able to enter the building and extinguish the fire.

A search of the apartment was conducted and no occupants were located. Other residents were evacuated from the building.

Early investigation indicates the fire to be intentionally set. A suspect was quickly identified by witnesses and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office was able to locate the suspect near Highway 40 and Tecumseh Road.

The Topeka Fire Department arrested and booked 49-year-old Bret J. Brandewie into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for aggravated arson.

The estimated amount of damage is estimated between $10,000 to $15,000.
