Body found in the Arkansas River identified as missing kayaker

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Authorities say a body found in the Arkansas River in south Wichita on Thursday is that of missing kayaker 24-year-old Brian Bergkamp.

Kayakers reported finding a body around 2:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, according to Sgt. Nikki Woodrow, Wichita Police Department. Bergkamp has been missing since July 9th. He disappeared off I-235 and 21st street when he tried to save a woman from drowning on the Arkansas River.

The Catholic Diocese says Brian went to Garden Plain High School and Bendictine College in Atchison. He is a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Garden Plain.

A memorial mass was held by his family on July 18 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
