Big Red One soldier dies

FORT RILEY, Kan. (KSNT) – A 1st Infantry Division Soldier died July 30 at a Salina hospital.

Pfc. Luis Ortiz, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter repairer with Company D, 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Inf. Div., lost consciousness while running June 27 in Junction City, Kansas, and was subsequently hospitalized. 

 “It’s never easy to lose a member of your family,” said Lt. Col. Jennifer Reynolds, commander of the 3rd AHB, 1st Avn. Regt. “Our Soldiers are our family, and we extend our deepest sympathies and support to the family and friends of Pfc. Ortiz.”

Ortiz joined the Army in June 2015 and arrived at Fort Riley in January. He was 24 years old.  His awards include the National Defense Service Medal. He had not deployed.

HIs hometown of record is El Paso, Texas.
