Topeka police service dog dies overnight

TOPEKA, Kan.  (KSNT) – The Topeka Police Department reports a service dog passed away Monday night.

Topeka Police tell KSNT News Police Service Dog “Maverick” was running a training track Monday and showed no signs of illness at the conclusion of the track. About 15 minutes after being placed back in the air conditioned patrol vehicle, he started to show unusual behavior consistent with a seizure.

Police say he was immediately taken to a the TPD department contracted veterinarian to be examined. He was sedated and stabilized then transferred to the 24 hour vet clinic for observation overnight.

At 9:45 p.m. Thursday Maverick passed away while having another seizure. Police say Dr. Joe Kamer at Topeka Veterinary and Surgical Hospital is performing an animal autopsy Tuesday to try to determine the cause of death.
