Australia needed a win to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals and was able to do so in convincing fashion, defeating Zimbabwe 6-1.

The Matildas left little doubt in the result as they scored two goals within the first 15 minutes.

Forward Lisa De Vanna opened the scoring just two minutes into the game with a goal assisted by Katrina Gorry.

In the 15th minute, Australian captain Clare Polkinghorne scored off a corner kick to double her team’s lead.

The teams went into halftime with Australia leading 3-0 after Alanna Kennedy scored her team’s third goal late on in the first half.

The Australian scoring continued in the second half as Kyah Simon beat Zimbabwe goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai to the ball and scored in the 50th minute.

Five minutes later, Australia scored off another corner kick this time through substitute Michelle Heyman. Heyman then added her second goal of the match to make it 6-0.

In stoppage time, Zimbabwe got a consolation goal to make the final score 6-1.

With the victory, Australia advances to the quarterfinals as one of the top two third place teams in the tournament while Zimbabwe is eliminated.

Australia will face the winner of Group G, likely to be the U.S., or Group E, likely to be Brazil.
