HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Jurors have started deliberations in the trial of southern Kansas teenager charged as an adult in the killing of his mother and 11-year-old sister in a 2013 house fire.
KWCH-TV reports that the Samuel Vonachen is on trial in Reno County on two counts of premeditated first-degree murder. Jurors began their deliberations Wednesday after the closing arguments ended.
Vonachen is accused of using gasoline to ignite his family’s Hutchinson home in September 2013 when he was 14. The blaze killed 11-year-old Audrey Vonachen and their mother, 47-year-old Karla Jo Vonachen. His father escaped.
A doctor who testified for the defense says Vonachen has a dissociative disorder and didn’t know what he was doing. The prosecution says the doctor makes no sense.
