TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Washburn football team begins its 2016 season with a Thursday night game against Northeastern State at Yager Stadium.
The Ichabods return several key pieces from last year’s team, including starting quarterback Derek McGinnis.
“I love these first two games under the lights,” said McGinnis. “It’s a lot more energy, more hyped up, and you get all day to think about it. We just have to come out and play, and get ready to go.”
“Yeah we were really ready in fall camp,” said Washburn senior defensive back Zach Franklin. “There’s been a big improvement between last year and this year. We have a lot of people who understand the play book and know what’s going on. People are just going out there trying to play and trying to win.”
“I think it’s a great thing that the conference does,” said Washburn head coach Craig Schurig. “Two Thursday night games. It gets the student body involved, so we hope to have a packed house. Everyone who is anxious for football, it’s time.”
Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
