Man dies after Wichita traffic stop and crash

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said one man is dead after a traffic stop and a crash Thursday morning. Lt. Lin Dehning with the sheriff’s department said it all started as a traffic stop just after 1 a.m.

Dehning says a deputy was trying to pull a car over around the 1100 block of North Tyler, that’s when shots were fired. Lt. Dehning has not released information on who fired the gun or why. That shooting led to a chase that ended when the suspect crashed into a home in the 1500 block of North Tyler.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, and he died of his injuries. Tyler Road is shut down north and south of 13th, down to 9th and up to 15th Street for the investigation. Officials are unsure how long the road will remain closed.

Meanwhile, students attending Northwest High should use the 13th Street entrance. School will be held as scheduled.

Authorities are planning a media briefing later Thursday to release more details.
