EDSON, Kan. (KSNT) – One person has been shot and taken to a Colorado hospital following an officer-involved shooting Friday morning.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports at 8:10 a.m. they received a call from someone saying there was a vehicle stopped on I-70 at milepost 29 eastbound, 2 miles east of Edson, Kansas. The caller told KHP there was a man outside of the vehicle holding a baseball bat or a machete.
A trooper arrived on scene just two minutes later and found a 2014 Dodge passenger car stopped in the middle of the highway. The trooper reported one male subject hiding in the front of the call. The trooper called for back-up, got out of his patrol car and was rushed by the man, who was armed with a machete.
The trooper gave several commands for the man to drop the machete but he continued to approach the officer. The trooper fire his weapon, striking the male subject. KHP says the man was transported to Goodland Regional Medical Center and later flown to a Denver hospital.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the incident and has arrived on scene. KHP says the trooper will be put on paid administrative leave during the investigation as part of their policy.
