TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) — Someone set fire to three cars at a Southwest Topeka home late Sunday night. Fire investigators are certain this was no accident.
Kenneth Lambotte has been cleaning his driveway all Monday morning after his family’s cars were set on fire. Lambotte’s car and his granddaughter’s car were both in the driveway when this all happened. His granddaughter woke him up after seeing flames from the window then Lambotte said they walked outside to see both of their cars burning in his driveway.
“Out by the street where you’re parking, I heard a large explosion and my daughter’s car went up in flames,” Lambotte said.
He says he didn’t see anyone in the dark of night who might have been responsible. He then called 911 for help.
“It was personal because there were other vehicles on the block that they could have just, you know, done the same thing, but they didn’t,” Lambotte said. “They chose us.”
Investigators put the loss of the three cars at more than $11,000. Fire officials say it was an arsonist.
“We’re still doing follow up right now,” Fire Marshal for the Topeka Fire Department, Michael Martin said. “Actually at this time we do have suspect information. We have a person of interest. So we’re following through on that and seeing what all we can come up with.”
Lambotte says moments like this in life make him appreciate what he has today because it could be gone tomorrow.
“Don’t ever take anything for granted,” Lambotte said. “Live each day the fullest and try to do right by people.”
If you have any information about this arson, Topeka fire investigators are asking you to call Capital Area Crime Stoppers to make an anonymous report.
