Topeka apartment fire most likely set by ‘improperly discarded smoking materials’

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) — Firefighters saved 2 people trapped in the basement of an apartment fire early Wednesday morning.

Shawnee County Dispatch said firefighters were called about the fire at around midnight on Tuesday to the 1300 block of SW Western Avenue.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire inside the 3 story, 12 unit apartment building. Two people were found inside one of the apartments. Firefighters were able to get them out of the building. They were sent to a hospital and have non-life threatening injuries.

Initial investigation shows the fire was most likely caused accidentally by smoking materials that were not thrown away properly.

The estimated damage is $150,000.
