LARNED, Kan. (KSNW) – The Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility announced earlier this year that they will close. Now, the Kansas Department of Corrections has set March 3, 2017 as the facility’s final date of operation.
“Through our discussions with LJCF staff, it was evident that a closure date needed to be set,” stated Secretary of Corrections Joe Norwood. “In setting this date, staff have been given assurance of employment up until March 3, 2017.”
Since KDOC first announced the facility’s upcoming closure, the number of staff securing employment outside of LJCF has outpaced the transfer of youth.
Many of the staff are transferring to nearby correctional facilities, while others have secured employment with the Larned State Hospital. For those LJCF employees wishing to transfer to other state correctional facilities, moving expenses have been offered.
“Youth will remain housed at LJCF until January 23rd,” said Norwood. “As staff find other employment opportunities, public safety will remain our highest priority. The Remaining staff will close down the facility before vacating the building in March. I have been extremely pleased with the support that LSH has offered LJCF employees. I am committed to working with remaining employees to ensure that everyone is offered an opportunity to continue their employment with the state of Kansas after the facility’s closure.”
