TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Topeka police report one of their service dogs was attacked by a loose dog while they searched for a burglary suspect.
Officers with the Topeka Police Department responded to the 1500 block of SW Lane on reports of an aggravated burglary that had occurred overnight.
Police say while in the area officers located a suspect in possession of an item stolen in the burglary. Officers say the suspect was armed with a firearm. There was a struggle between the officers and the suspect, who was last seen running north from the area.
To assist officers in searching for the armed suspect a Police Service Dog was sent out. During the search the Police Service Dog was attacked by a loose dog. In order to
protect the Police Service Dog the handler had to fire his service weapon to stop the animals attack. The loose dog was injured and was taken by Animal Control Officers to a local
veterinarian for treatment.
