Topeka plane crash leaves a pilot in shock

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Sunday, a man is in shock after his plane crashed in South Topeka. The plane crash happened on a private airstrip near the intersection of SW 45th St and SE Paulen Rd.

“I was coming in and there was a little bit of crosswind, there wasn’t much,” James Long, the pilot of the crashed plane said.

Kansas Highway Patrol says the plane crash landed at the airstrip Sunday afternoon.

Shawnee County Sheriff and the KHP responded to the crash.

“Oh I was just depressed because I know it’s a lot of money to repair my plane. I wasn’t hurt or scared at all. I knew immediately what had happened, I forgot to get off my rutter pedal,” Long said.

The pilot was not injured in the crash landing. The plane only had minor damage to the front and wing.

“I have a private pilot, not just a lot of sadness now and getting wanting to get back in the air again,” Long said.

Plane crashes aren’t something even experienced troopers are used to.

“In my career, 15 years I have worked maybe six plane crashes,” Master Trooper Ramon Ramirez said.

The Kansas highway patrol is investigating the crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol will be sending all the information to the FAA when they are done investigating the crash.
