1 in custody for creepy clown threats towards Wichita schools

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police said one juvenile was arrested Monday morning for making clown threats toward Wichita schools. The juvenile is facing charges for criminal threats.

The threats started to appear this weekend on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Wichita police and USD 259 were alerted to the posts by parents.

“We take it very seriously, even if it is a prank or a hoax. Even though these people intend to do no harm, it causes unrest in our community. That is not okay, we take that very seriously,” said Sgt. Nikki Woodrow, Wichita Police Department.

Police said the investigation into the threats is ongoing, and they are looking for others.

Meanwhile, police stepped up security at schools across the area. It was especially noticeable at high schools where the threats were made.

“We asked all of our staff to be vigilant. We sent emails to all of administrators letting them know about these posts so that they were aware of them,” said Terri Moses, USD 259 Executive Director of Safety and Security. “We take every threat that we receive in USD 259 seriously, and I know the Wichita Police Department does too.”

Moses was asked why school wasn’t canceled.

“We made the decision that the threat was controlled as much as we could control the threat, that the schools were a safe place to be,” said Moses.

During the press briefing, Moses talked about the importance of parents monitoring their child’s social media accounts and internet activity.

“If they do have a Facebook account, we recommend that you friend your student on Facebook so you can see what they are posting,” said Moses. “Constantly monitor, their internet activity. Pay attention to what apps their putting on their phone.”
