WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police are investigating a murder after a 22-year-old woman died after being shot in the head on Monday.
The woman was found in the 2600 block of North Meadow Oaks Street in northeast Wichita around 4 p.m.
The woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition. She later died. During the investigation, officers learned family members tried to contact the woman, but they were unable to reach her. The woman was supposed to pick her mother up from work around 3 p.m., but she never arrived.
The mother went to her daughter’s home, and she found that she had been shot one time.
“Through interviews with family members, we learned that the victim had recently broken up with her boyfriend a couple of weeks earlier,” said Lt. Todd Ojile, Wichita Police Department.
The 27-year-old ex-boyfriend, identified as Dane T. Owens, was found at a home in Andover. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail for one count of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary on Tuesday. On Wednesday, that charge had been upgraded to intentional first-degree murder according to booking reports. Kansas State University confirmed to KSNT News that he was a sophomore at the university majoring in social work.
A weapon used in the crime was recovered from an east Wichita lake.
Police believe the woman was shot around noon.
