Topeka elementary school cautious after clowns spotted near the school

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – A Topeka elementary school is being cautious and taking action after two students spotted a person dressed as a clown in the bushes at the edge of the playground area.

The incident took place at Wanamaker Elementary School Thursday afternoon according to Principal Marc Sonderegger. Police did respond but were unable to find anyone.

An email was sent out to parents and students Thursday evening saying as a precaution, students would not be allowed on the field Friday or next week during recess times and increased supervision will be on the playground.

“If someone is spotted, students will be immediately brought inside, authorities will be notified, and we will initiate our lock-in procedure.”

Sonderegger says in the email that they have many students with anxiety, so they will not be talking about the clowns during class time, but assured parents that staff will be extra vigilant in their supervision.

“If students ask about the clowns, we will assure them we are keeping them safe.”

The district chief of police has been monitoring the situation closely and assures the school that despite rumors on social media, there have been no credible threats made against any students, staff, or facilities.

In the last couple of months, numerous sightings and concerns have been reported across the United States with individuals, or groups of individuals, dressing up as clowns. The purpose of this message to Auburn-Washburn parents is to reassure you that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

As these rumors start to happen closer to home, we have raised awareness in all schools and school-related events. Our own school police are partnering with local law enforcement to investigate and respond as necessary. To date, they have not found any credible threats. If you or your student witness anything or receive information that gives you concern regarding the safety of our schools, please report it immediately to school administration.

Thank you for your partnership in providing a safe school community.
