Multiple injuries in officer-involved car crash in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT)- Police were on the scene of a multiple car crash involving a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper on I-470 and Southwest Gage.

The accident happened around 3:30 Thursday afternoon. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the trooper was stopped on the inside median of the highway. A 2014 Toyota Avalon driven by 83-year-old Bill Dowden of Lenexa drifted across two lanes and hit the cruiser from behind. Dowden and 79-year-old Marion Dowden were injured and taken to a Topeka hospital. Their injuries are not known and the trooper inside his vehicle was not seriously hurt. The eastbound lane of the highway from Fairlawn to Gage was shut down until about 4:30 p.m.

 The Kansas Highway Patrol and Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) mapped the scene. The Patrol’s Kansas Turnpike Authority troopers are investigating the crash.
