Washburn tennis star advances to semifinals in national tournament

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Washburn’s Madeline Hill won her opening round match of the ITA Oracle Cup in Surpise, Arizona on Thursday morning in straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

It didn’t come easy however for the Ichabods sophomore tennis player. She trailed 0-5 in the opening set before rallying back to win in a tiebreak.

Hill was a singles state champion at Washburn Rural high school before she went to play at SIU-Edwardsville. Following her freshman season, Hill transferred to Washburn and hasn’t lost a match since arriving on campus in singles play. So far this season she is 16-0.

Next up: Hill will play Saioa Gomez de Segura of Mercyhurst in the semifinals of the ITA Oracle Cup on Friday October 14 at 12:30 p.m. CT. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. CT in Arizona.
