TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Election season is coming up which means many topics will be brought to our attention. One of those is the decisions to keep 5 Kansas Supreme Court Justices. You have the power to decide whether 5 Kansas Supreme Court justices retain their seats. And two Former Kansas Attorneys General are urging you to retain them.
“It is a fair and impartial system. It looks at the facts,” Bob Stephan, Former Kansas Attorney General. “I don’t agree with them all the time but that doesn’t have anything to do with whether you are being fair.”
However political leaders are against this… The plans to oust the justices come after September’s hearing whether enough money is spent on schools.
“They have their role in the government, and I have mine,” Governor Sam Brownback said.
The plans also stem from the overturning of the Carr brothers’ death sentences in 2014. The Carr brothers were convicted of killing 4 people — and they still remain behind bars.
“The idea that there is one or two cases that mean we should throw out the whole system is wrong,” Former Kansas Attorney General Steve Six said.
With all of this… There is even more controversy with who will be appointed if the judges are not retained…
“I don’t get to appoint whoever I want,” Gov. Brownback said. “They send me three nominees and if the governor doesn’t pick one of those three the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court picks one of them.
The November ballot you will be asked if you want to keep 5 of the Kansas Supreme Court Justices.
