TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – After shooting an intruder last October, Victim, Ashley Mundy spoke to KSNT News once the intruder was sentenced on October 18, 2016.
“Oh my gosh. There’s someone in my house,” homeowner, Ashley Mundy said. “Like, I could hear shuffling in the basement. And I kind of grabbed my phone and my gun and jumped out of bed.”
October of last year, Ashley Mundy used to live at a house in Overbrook, Kansas until she had an intruder come into her home. She woke up to glass breaking in her basement.
“Few minutes later…a fifty year old stranger walks through my living room,” Mundy said. “And my heart just dropped.”
And then adrenaline kicked in.
“I just remember him turning at me and I shot,” Mundy said. “When I shot of course, blood’s going everywhere; he’s screaming at the top of his lungs and just like pure panic.”
Mundy saw the intruder heading towards her front door trying to shut off her alarm system and shot him once he turned around. The bullet went through the man’s arm and into his stomach. Police told Mundy the intruder was reaching for a machete. Not only was she protecting herself, she was protecting her son, Braedyn who is now five years old.
“After the fact, I know that was my main concern was getting away from Brayden,” Mundy said. “I didn’t want him near my son. I wanted everything away from my son”
Mundy says her son stayed asleep through the entire invasion.
Mundy later found out the intruder was her neighbor across the street. Forty-eight-year-old, Bruce Jolly, who’s now sentenced to almost five years in prison. Mundy says she’s glad jolly got the max sentence possible. But, as for her life now…
“I mean I’m checking behind me,” Mundy said. “I’m more scared of the dark, I’m more scared of the basement. I don’t sleep well at night — ever!”
Since then, Mundy has moved to a new home and hasn’t gone back. She says she’s still trying to figure out why her and why that night. Jolly is serving his 4 years and 9 month sentence at the state’s prison in El Dorado, Kansas.
