Topeka crews respond to Thursday night apartment fire

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – The Topeka Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Thursday night.

Crews were sent to 1301 SW Harrison Street, just south of the Kansas statehouse, at 7:50 p.m. Neighbors called 911 to report seeing smoke and flames coming from an apartment. Neighbors attempted to extinguish the blaze with fire extinguishers.

When crews arrived they reported smoke and flames coming from the third floor apartment. Fire crews evacuated the complex and conducted  search of the apartment and quickly put out the fire.

Officials say the occupants of the apartment were not home at the time of the fire.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the cause of the fire was accidental related to cooking.

The fire is believed to have started within a stove.

The estimated amount of damaged is estimated to be over $8,000 in structural damage and $2,000 in content loss.
