Police: Memphis park shooting may have been over cellphone

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A shooting at a Memphis park that left a 16-year-old girl dead and wounded five other youths possibly stemmed from a disagreement over a cellphone, police said Wednesday.

A group of people wearing bandannas over their faces opened fire Tuesday night at Zodiac Park, Memphis police spokesman Louis Brownlee said.

A 16-year-old girl died at the scene. Four other females and a male were wounded and taken to hospitals. The male and one of the females were in critical condition Wednesday, Brownlee said.

All the shooting victims are from Mississippi and are 21 years old or younger, Brownlee said.

The suspects fled in a tan vehicle, police said. Officers cordoned off a section of the park, including a parking area that appeared to be where the shooting took place. Neighbors said the parking area is never closed off at night, and that it’s often the scene of suspicious activity.

No arrests have been made. Police are still combing through evidence and interviewing witnesses, Brownlee said.

Chester Anderson and Phillip Glayson told The Commercial Appeal they were taking a walk when they heard gunfire.

“I’m guessing 15 to 17 shots,” Anderson said.

Witnesses said they saw large groups of young people fleeing the scene. Some of them, Glayson said, were in upscale cars, including a BMW.

“We just saw a lot of people coming out of the park, running from gunfire,” said Glayson, who called 911. “The whole neighborhood heard the shots.”
