TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A former Democratic lawmaker has regained his seat in the Kansas House by defeating the two-term Republican who ousted him.
Former Democratic state Rep. Eber Phelps defeated fellow Hays resident and GOP Rep. Sue Boldra in Tuesday’s election in the 111th District in western Kansas.
Phelps held the seat for 16 years before losing the seat to Boldra in 2012. He is a sales representative for a heating, air conditioning, geothermal and lighting contractor, and he serves on the Hays City Commission.
Boldra is a longtime teacher and instructor in the Teacher Education Department at Fort Hays State University.
Boldra has positioned herself as a moderate, but she and other Republicans have faced a backlash amid voter discontent with GOP Gov. Sam Brownback and the state’s budget woes.
