PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The city of Portland woke up to a mess on the streets on Friday.

Anti-Trump rioters destroyed property as peaceful protests turned violent. Portland Police say anarchists took over the protest, which began at 5 p.m. Thursday. By 8 p.m., police declared that the protest had turned into a riot.

Around 4,000 people joined as the night went on and 26 were arrested. A total damage estimate is not available but many businesses throughout downtown and the Pearl District had smashed windows.

Portland activist Gregory R. McKelvey, one of the organizers of recent protests connected with Don’t Shoot PDX, said the group is now called Portland’s Resistance. He released a statement saying the group does not condone the violence and planned to help cleanup on Friday.

“We would like to take a few moments to disavow the actions taken to destroy property, to clarify the intentions and goals of our new efforts and to offer empathy to all the stakeholders in last night’s protests and those to come,” McKelvey said.

McKelvey says a peaceful rally is planned for Friday at 5 p.m.
