TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – The Topeka fire crews are investigating the cause of a late night structure fire in Topeka.
The Topeka Fire Department responded to the fire at 10:45 Monday night at 1144 SW Plass Avenue.
Neighbors reported smoke and flames coming from the back of the structure and went to knock on the front door of the house. The homeowner did wake up and was able to escape the fire however officials say a pet cat was killed in the fire.
When Topeka fire crews arrived they reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the structure. No other occupants were found to be home when crews searched the residence. The fire was quickly extinguished. Officials report the intense heat also damaged a detached garage and a neighboring house.
Early investigations indicates the cause of the fire to be undetermined at this time. Investigators say the fire started within the exterior at the east side of the structure.
The estimated amount of damage is $25,000 in structural loss and $10,000 in content loss.
