WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Police are investigating a shooting that left a 27-year-old woman dead, and an infant missing in west Wichita. It happened between 12 and 3:30 p.m. in the 200 block of North Brunswick. That’s northwest of Maple and Ridge Road.
Police said the child’s father arrived at home and found his 27-year-old wife dead from a gunshot wound.
Police said the the couple’s 6-day-old girl was missing. She has been identified as Sofia Victoria Gonzalez Albarca.
Police initially said they were working with the KBI to get an Amber Alert issued. However, the KBI said it doesn’t meet their criteria. At 5:45 p.m. police issued the following statement.
“There has been no Amber Alert issued, nor do I think there will be. It does not meet the criteria based by KBI to issue an Amber Alert,” said Sgt. Nikki Woodrow, Wichita Police Department.
KSN asked the KBI for clarification and received the following response.
Regarding the current situation, we have specific criteria that must be met before an amber alert is issued. We are awaiting confirmation on pertinent details to determine whether an alert can be issued in this instance. Please stay posted in case an alert is issued.
Officers have canvassed the neighborhood.
“We’ve contacted everybody around here. Everybody knows what’s going on obviously. We’ve knocked on doors, looked for little Sofia around here so there’s no safety concerns around here,” said Woodrow.
KSN asked Sgt. Woodrow if the baby was in danger.
“We don’t know. She’s just missing, just missing from the house.”
Earlier, police were looking for a 1997 purple Cadillac in connection to the case. However, later Thursday evening Woodrow said police had contacted the owner of that car and the vehicle was no longer being sought in connection with the case.
