ESU Lady Hornets jump to No. 1 in Division II Coaches Poll

EMPORIA, Kan. – After winning their first six games by an average of 43.0 points per game, the Emporia State Lady Hornets have moved up to #1 in this week’s WBCA NCAA Division II National Coaches Poll. This is the fifth season in which the Lady Hornets have reached the top of the national poll.

Emporia State is averaging 97.0 points while giving up just 54.0 points per game. The Lady Hornets are in the top five in the nation in scoring, scoring margin, rebound margin, assists per game, blocked shots per game and assist to turnover ratio.

Guards Kelly Moten and Addie Lackey are both averaging 15.2 points per game to lead ten Lady Hornets that average at least 5.0 points per game. They are joined in double figures by Kyrstie Miller at 12.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Tiana Moala is the leading rebounder for the Lady Hornets at 8.0 boards per game.

Emporia State is ranked #1 in this week’s WBCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Lady Hornets ended the 2009-10 season ranked #1 after winning the national championship. Emporia State was also ranked #1 in the regular season in the Nov. 28, 2006 poll after opening at #3 in the 2006-07 Preseason Poll. The Lady Hornets were first ranked #1 in the Jan. 11, 2005 poll. The Lady Hornets have been in the Coaches Top 25 a total of 258 weeks since first appearing in the 1997-98 preseason poll. They have been in the top ten for 181 weeks the most weeks of any NCAA Division II team. They are also currently ranked #1 in the D2SIDA National Media Poll, the Massey Ratings and the HeroSports.com ranking.

The Lady Hornets have two games this week. They will play host to Ark.-Ft. Smith on Wednesday night before entertaining defending national champion Lubbock Christian on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off Wednesday is set for 7:00 p.m. with Saturday’s tip time set for 1:00 p.m. in White Auditorium.
