TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Multiple accidents due to icy conditions around Shawnee County are causing slow traffic early Monday morning.
The Topeka Police Departments says at 4:34 Monday morning, officers were being sent to several accidents happening on the Westgate Bridge on U.S. Highway 75 in Topeka.
The Westgate Bridge was closed temporally but has now reopened. K-4 Highway (Oakland Expressway) was also closed closed. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating multiple accidents that have occurred on the bridge just before 6:00 a.m.
Topeka police say to please use caution when driving Monday morning due to some area bridges having ice such as the Oakland Expressway and the Westgate Bridge.
The Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from citizen’s who witnessed a motorcycle traveling northbound on the Oakland Expressway that entered the ditch south of where the bridge crosses over Shunganunga Creek. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office would like to speak to the driver of a flat bed semi tractor trailer that was headed north on the Oakland Expressway and may have witnessed the accident. A Chevy Malibu struck the flat bed trailer, causing injuries to the driver who was transported to a local hospital.
The Oakland Expressway has been reopened.
