Topeka police arrest suspect following battery incident with officer

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Police have ended their search and arrested a suspect involved in a burglary and battery of an officer in southwest Topeka.

The Topeka Police Department tells KSNT News officers spotted a person who resembled the description of the person of interest in the 3700 block of SW 34th Street.  Police say the person ran from officers but was later taken into custody near Twilight and Gage without incident and taken in for questioning.

The person was identified as 23-year-old Justin Welch, of Topeka.

Officers responded to a domestic call over the weekend in the 2400 block of SW Candletree Drive, that’s at the Whispering Pines apartments.

When they arrived police say Welch shoved an officer down a flight of stairs, punched them in the face and then ran on foot.
