Fire destroys home in SW Topeka, 1 person taken to hospital

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – An early morning structure fire sent one person to the hospital Wednesday and left one family without a home.

Emergency crews responded to the house fire just before 6:00 a.m. in southwest Topeka.

When crews arrived they found the residence located at 4320 SW Marlboro Road, just southeast of Lake Sherwood to be fully engulfed in flames.

A fire official on scene tells KSNT News that three people were in the home at the time of the fire.  The State Fire Marshal says 32-year-old Matthew Wichert was taken to a local hospital in serious condition and later taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

As of Thursday morning Wichert was in critical condition.

The fire caused part of the structure to collapse.  KSNT News Reporter Jared Thompson says the only thing standing now is a chimney.

A fire official tells KSNT news explosions from ammunition and a gas line break made fighting the fire difficult. Firefighters had to stop midway.

At 11:30 a.m. crews were still dealing with smoke and ATF was investigating.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation. Damages are estimated at $500,000.
