Victims identified in plane crash near Billard Airport

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed two people are dead after a plane crash near Billard Airport, in Oakland.

According to KHP, the victims are William Leeds, 61, of Topeka and James Bergman, 55, of Leawood.

Leeds was a doctor with Pulmonary and Sleep Associates in Topeka.

Both were killed when the plane missed the runway at the Philip Billard Municipal Airport and hit the ground at a high rate of speed. The plane landed in a field between the runway and the taxi road to the airport terminal. Both men were wearing seat belts.

The plane was a fixed-wing multi-engine plane manufactured in 1965.

The crash was reported around 8:30 p.m., Monday. The plane that crashed was registered out of Mission, Kansas, in Johnson County.
