TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – One man is dead after a police shooting in east Topeka Thursday morning. The man has been identified as 30-year-old Dominique Tyrell White.
At 9:20 a.m. the Topeka Police Department responded to the 300 block of SE Lawrence Street regarding a report of a disturbance with shots fired in the area.
TPD said officers responding encountered a suspicious person in the area. While investigating the person, officers saw a handgun on the person. Police said while trying to secure the firearm, the person struggled with officers and attempted to run.
According to Topeka Police, while fleeing from the police, the man reached for the pocket containing the firearm, causing the officers to fire their weapons. Officers provided medical assistance and the man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police tell KSNT News the man’s gun was recovered from the scene. Police said everyone believed to be involved in the incident have been identified and there is no danger to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing. The Lawrence Police Department is handling the investigation in the interest in transparency.
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol also responded to help TPD with the incident.
Police said the officers involved in the incident have been put on administrative leave, and will not be identified at this time.
