KSNT Storm Track Meteorologist
Vanessa Alonso is the weekend morning meteorologist for KSNT News. She joined the KSNT Storm Track Weather Team in February 2017.
She became interested in meteorology when she was only 7, when Category 5 Hurricane Andrew devastated her hometown of Miami, Fla. in August 1992. That experience with Mother Nature gave her the drive and inspiration to get where she is today. She is a member of The American Meteorological Society and The National Weather Association. She is now currently in the process of getting the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal (AMS CBM.)
Vanessa graduated from the University of Miami in May 2008 as the first student to receive a Bachelor of Science in Communication in both meteorology and broadcast journalism. She was active in various clubs and organizations across campus including being a cheerleader, dancer and flag girl during football season. She was a SKYWARN storm spotter for the National Weather Service in Miami and interned at the weather departments of CNN in Atlanta, WTVJ NBC 6, WSVN Channel 7 FOX and WFOR CBS 4 in Miami. She even was highly involved as a writer, reporter and weather forecaster for UMTV’s award winning show, Newsvision.
In August 2009, Vanessa left the Sunshine State and hurricanes behind, and headed out to Missouri to pursue her career goals and dreams. She lived first in Joplin working for a short time at KOAM-TV/KFJX FOX 14 as weekend meteorologist.
In April 2011, Vanessa moved up to Kirksville, Mo. to KTVO-TV as bilingual English/Spanish meteorologist and multimedia journalist. Five weeks after she moved from Joplin, the EF-5 tornado hit the city on May 22. Vanessa used to live in the area that was in the tornado’s path and covered much of the aftermath and recovery efforts. She is so proud on how much the city has rebuilt and how far they have come
When Vanessa is not following the weather, she likes to stay active by traveling, dancing, exercising, cooking/baking, watching movies, reading, shopping, hanging out with my family and friends, watching her hometown teams. She has also developed a fan base for the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs and University of Kansas Jayhawks. She is also a huge Disney fan and tries to visit Walt Disney World any chance she can get.
